End of the Year Homeschool Wrap-Up (2017-2018)

I’m so excited to share everything we have accomplished during this school year. During this year we endured the loss of two awesome grandfathers and dealt with severe sickness but God strengthened us through it all. We learned how to love each other through grief, support one another in trying new things, and cater to those that are sick and shut-in. It has been a school year like none other and I’m so glad I have my wonderful husband and The Cool Kids to share this homeschool experience with.

Here are a few things we’ve done recently:

  • Spent the weekend on the Kemah Boardwalk (vlog coming soon)
  • Participated in several local sports camps
  • Bear did a phenomenal job in swim lessons and was invited to participate on a team
  • Bam Bam was able to participate in swim lessons and had so much fun
  • Princess perfected potty training
  • I started reading books again
  • Husband’s team soared to number one in the company and has remained there
  • All The Cool Kids did exceptional well on their assessments leaving me with a 5th, Kindergartener, and Preschooler for next year
  • Bam Bam gave a speech at the holiday luncheon
  • Princess grew, and grew, and grew
  • We had art appreciation month (vlog coming soon)
  • Bear built a few robots and that has peaked his interest in robotics
  • We finished My Father’s World Exploring Countries and Cultures

To see more of what we have had going on be sure to watch this recent YouTube video.

We had a fantastic year and I am already planning for our rest month as well as the next academic year. Be sure to follow the blog for updates on our education journey and you can see everything we’ve been doing on our homeschool Instagram, @TeamKempAcademy.

Make this week awesome,

Our 2018 Homeschool Goals & Resolutions

Usually people are excited about going into January with new goals in place but by the middle of the month, most have moved away from them.  I use January as a time of reflection, fasting, and separation from social media to clear my head.  After this time I set my goals and resolutions for the new year and I get going to meet and exceed them.   Since February is about love, I thought I’d share a special tip each week on how you can “Love Your Selfie” better in 2018.  This week’s tips is to simply set S.M.A.R.T. goals and begin the work towards achieving them.

Love your selfie 1

Goal setting is simply a measured form of setting a resolution because you will be able to check your progress via timeframes and completed steps as you work towards it.  Whether the personal, professional, or spiritual part of your life, there should always be a goal you are working towards.  Your goals should be specific, measureable, achievable (attainable), relevant, and time bound (traceable).  Remember to express your goals positively and repeat them aloud often.  Write them down and hang them somewhere in your home that is part of your daily and frequent line of sight.  Furthermore, set precise dates to measure your achievement and celebrate once you’ve completed it.

Homeschool Resolutions 3

I recently found this on social media and thought I’d share this quick yet fun activity.  **Disclaimer: Now, this is only an activity and should only be used as your set goals or resolutions if you deem the statements applicable to where you are or desire to be.** It is my hope that this little activity makes you laugh, smile, and ignites your passion for accomplishing great things in 2018!

I just love the predictive text posts I’ve been seeing lately and I thought this one was perfect way to set some cute and quirky homeschool goals/resolutions.  Initially I used the original formula to create these three sentences:

  • Be a little faster than the last one.
  • Be a lot of money to the other side of the world.
  • Be the best sales people in The Lone Star State. (this applies to husband)
  • Be the best option that he enjoys.

I used my device to write so my predictive text includes a myriad of long phrases in addition to the words.  I decided to just start with “Be” and create a few more sentences which I felt were spot on for my current season. Here are the additional ones I came up with:

  • Be more about our homeschooling.
  • Be a great idea to the other side of the world.
  • Be encouraged by preschoolers watching ABC Mouse and the dialogue.
  • Be sure to see how your day was filled with phenomenal memories.
  • Be safe from dangers seen and heard.

Though this activity was meant to be fun I believe I created the perfect combination of achievement possibilities for Team KEMP Academy.  I felt so inspired that I decided to appropriately rewrite these (as suggested above) in my planners and adopt them as our resolutions for 2018.  I’ve actually already started setting things in motion to ensure we achieve each one.

Homeschool Resolutions 2

Now it is your turn to complete the activity.  To reflect the image used earlier, the formula is:

  1. Be a lot…
  2. Be a little…
  3. Be the best…

Type those first words and then use predictive text until you have a complete sentence.

So, what cute, quirky, or accurate resolutions did you come up with?  Be sure to let me know in the comment section below.

Make this year successful,

Ta’Neisha K.

Merry CHRISTmas

christmas 2017 8

Merry Christmas!!  Yes, despite the few comments and many emails received due to this holiday blog post, our household still celebrates Christmas and all the joy that comes with the season.  The month of December was filled with joy, celebration, vacations, and family memories and we can’t wait to share our accomplishments with you.

christmas 2017 6

Here is the list of awesome accomplishments from December:

  1. We completed five Science projects!  This was a fun month for science and all the children had so much fun conducting experiments on their level.
  2. We attended several Christmas parties via friends, family, and church throughout the month.  We even hosted our own Holiday Pajama Party on Christmas Eve.
  3. I lesson planned, and lesson planned, and lesson planned some more!
  4. We managed to laugh and smile through the holiday season a lot more than we thought we would.  Losing a loved ones, no matter when, is hard but we are grateful for the comfort of God as we made it through our first Christmas without Pops, my husband’s father who passed in July, and Great Pa-Pa, my grandfather who passed at the beginning of December. As 2017 comes to an end, I implore each of you to love on ALL (yes, I mean ALL) of your family, make time to make memories, and take lots of pictures. Time is our most valuable currency as well as our most precious commodity and inestimable asset.  Every one should make family time a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly priority because life, no matter how long, is truly short

christmas 2017 7

Father God, thank you for the reader of my blog posts and viewers of the YouTube videos because their support has afforded a myriad of opportunities and for that I am truly grateful.  Thank you for family, friends, and all the memories we have made with them this year.  Thank you for the year 2017!  It might not have been perfect but strengthening our obedience to your will and growth in your word was worth every obstacle encountered.  Thank you for the every year ending with reminders to be thankful in November and to spread CHRISTmas joy in December! And finally Lord, thank you for the birth, life, death, and subsequent resurrection of your son Jesus Christ through which we have immediate access to salvation.  Just as you did this year, and in every moment of time prior, we trust you to guide us into and through 2018 because we can accomplish nothing without you.  In the name of Jesus, Amen

christmas 2017 9

We accomplished a lot more but I think that’s enough to share for now.  This is the last blog post for 2017 and I pray that it finds you all in the best of health, strength, and faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I am so grateful for each and every person that has supported my hobby this year and hope you found encouragement, laughs, and learned a few new things. I can’t wait to see what next year brings!

See you in 2018,

Ta’Neisha K.

My 4 Favorite Bible Reading Plans

Recently I shared the post about Why I Love My Bible during which I shared information about why the word should be near and dear to our hearts.  Since writing that post my Passion for studying God’s word has been reignited and I found myself learning more and more. I am so excited to share with you a few Bible plans that I have completed recently.  These plans range from 3 days to 90 days and have required me to commit to reading scripture daily.   What initialy was a monthly goal turned into a strong desire to seek God all the more.

Each plan can be  found via the YouVersion website or bible app which is available for all devices.  Depending on the plan length I would spend approximately 5 to 60 minutes studying daily. I also love that you can listen to the audio version of the scripture which became my favorite thing to do while cooking dinner.  You can also share your plan progress with your friends for extra accountability.

Before we dive in, here is my recent video about why we NEED the Bible.

Here are my recently completed favorites:

  • Bible in 90 Days came at a very hard time in my life. Over the summer we were dealing with the sickness of my father-in-law and I just found myself truly sad and discouraged.  I decided to read the entire Bible as a reminder of the all powerful God that I serve.  Doing this gave me so much comfort and also provided peace to my family as we listened in the car and at home.  If I ever missed a day I would double or triple the next reading until I caught up.  I made sure that I completed this program within exactly 90 days.

  • God, Help Me Not To Mess Up My Kids! The name says it all but doesn’t include that this was an awesome prayer plan.  I had no idea that this 5-day commitment would walk me through praying God’s word over my children and household.  As a busy mother sometimes we feel like we don’t have enough time to tarry before the Lord but this plan provided so much insight to a deep, thorough, effectual, feverent prayer life.
  • What To Say At A Funeral came at the perfect time because when my father of all past I really did not know what to say to my husband. Yes we are firm believers and I still had no words for him other than “I’m so sorry honey.”  This short reading plan provide various ways we can encourage believers who have lost their love ones.  The author also explain things that he did not want to hear and I made sure not to say those to my husband. I really think that this plan helped me be there for my family and encourage them with the word rather than my pain filled emotions.

  •  Finally, Mama Needs A Do-Over came at a time when I wanted to help encourage another homeschool mom. Turns out this plan helped me too!  Within this reading plan you will find ways to conquer, reset, and find peace in hard days.

There are so many other plans that I could share with you but I will save those for Part 2.  Right now, download the YouVersion app if you have not already and make time to dive into the word of God.  You can set reminders for your reading plans and share them with your friends so they can see your progress or lack thereof.  Sometimes I would use the app to read the scriptures but often I find myself flipping through the pages of the physical Bible.  The app is cool but there is nothing like holding the word of God.

You can find additional information about why we should study the word of God here.

We NEED The Bible!!

Make this week grand,

Ta’Neisha K

September 2017 Homeschool Wrap-Up

Sep17 Wrap up

As this month comes to a close, I had to share a few things that have been going on for quite some time now. All the details for what we’ve have been up to during recent events, how we have been adjusting since the passing of our beloved father, and what curriculum we are using can be found via this recent video.

Sep17 Wrap up 4

September was a good month for Team KEMP Academy as we all learned our new normal and took school one day at a time.  This month’s accomplishments include:

  • Bear completing two science projects
  • Bam Bam doing great in speech
  • Princess learning shapes and recognizing them throughout the house or while we are out
  • I lesson planned for the entire month and two weeks into October.  WHOOP WHOOP ! Take that procrastination <sticks out tongue>
  • Bear read five chapter books, most within one weekend and one within two hours.  He enjoys reading and even helped write a recent review.
  • Bam Bam confirmed his left hand status and has been writing up a storm.
  • Princess got a new kitchen for her birthday and keeps the family full on delicious plastic and imaginary cuisine.
  • We’ve been having family fifteen minute workouts or stretching time to start our day.  It has been so much fun and really helps us all wake up.
  • I reinstated Friday Fun Day which consists of a science project or messy art and lunch in the living room while we watch a movie.  We’ve been enjoying the Torchlighters series via our Amazon Prime membership.
  • HOOPLA has been a blessing and we recommend listening to the audio books while riding in the car. You can learn more about how we use HOOPLA via this awesome hyperlink.
  • I have been keeping up with my Bible in 90 Days reading plan via YouVersion.  Next time I definitely want to do a chronological reading plan.
  • Our local library had ninja story time.  IT WAS AWESOME!! Ninjas and books go great together.

As always, be sure to check back to the blog weekly for awesome reads to help get you through the week.  I have a few homeschool giveaways coming soon so make sure you are subscribed to my blog and YouTube channel for those announcements.

Homeschool with Joy, Focus, & Confidence

Apologia 6

One of the most frequently asked questions I hear are “how do you get started homeschooling,” which is where I usually refer them to a few videos and blog posts that tell our story.  Now, that I’ve had the chance to review How to HOMESCHOOL with Stunning Confidence, Contagious Joy, and Amazing Focus (DVD & Coursebook) from Apologia Educational Ministries, I will also be sure to include it in my list of resources.  This course in based in Christianity and includes two DVDs with videos that accompany the chapters in the provided course book.  Various topics are covered within this course that will help get the family started, keep them motivated to continue, and even look beyond a high school diploma into continued education.

Apologia 5

First, let’s discuss the videos provided on the two DVDs.  Initially I assumed the videos would go through different steps, similar to a class or online course, and provide the viewer with the information in a formal way.  Apologia decided to take a different approach and I’m so glad they did.  These videos are approximately ten to fifteen minutes and honestly feel like you are in the room chatting with your friends, Rachael Carman and Leslie Nunnery.  I was so happy to hear the women share their personal stories, testimonies, frustrations, challenges, tips, tricks, and solutions with such transparency.  I do this all the time because you never want to share only the good when someone is about to embark on the homeschool journey.  These ladies covered so many topics during their dialogue and their words were extremely encouraging.

Apologia 3

Next, let’s dig into the course book information and assignments.  I found the course book to be a synopsis of the conversations had between the Rachael and Leslie.  Within the pages you will find approximately two pages of reading per chapter and a connected page for notes per chapter, along with scriptures, and continued encouragement.  I love that the lessons aren’t designed to take up much of your time and the information provided is easily accessible and relatable.  Some of the course topics include setting goals, tips for choosing curriculum, dealing with opposition, finding support, organization, continuing education, and even marriage.  During this course you are also given ten assignments which have you do some research about local programs and your state homeschool laws, organize items, spend time in prayer, and so much more.

Lastly, I was happy to find even more resources within the FREE online appendix.  Through a password protected website you will be able to access special blog posts, Pinterest Boards, prayer and family resources, and printables not include within the course book.  You will also be given access to join the private Facebook group for others who have previously taken or are currently taking the course.  There is something amazing about have a social media group that you can access 24/7 for feedback, encouragement, and support throughout this journey.  I also love that there are new homeschoolers and veterans in the group from so many places, making it easy to reach out for understanding to situations that might only pertain to your area.

I don’t doubt that this course will be extremely helpful to those interested in homeschooling and who feel overwhelmed by the very thought of it.  As I was going through the videos, I thought about our decision to homeschool years ago and I realized that I did every one of the assignments based off of advice and conversations with other homeschoolers.  Now, I look forward to sharing Apologia Educational Ministries, step-by-step approach to getting started with those interested in embarking on the call from God to educate your children at home.  Use How to HOMESCHOOL with Stunning Confidence, Contagious Joy, and Amazing Focus (DVD & Coursebook) to light an educational fire in yourself and your children.
