Classical Music & Watercolors

Since our previous Art Appreciation posts received so much love, I thought I’d share another fun art class. We are learning about Classical Music and since each piece has a unique personality, it only made sense to add art.

For this experience, we used some watercolors that I snagged via Blitsy for $1.52 over the Christmas holiday season. We listened to a few classical pieces from our Music Appreciation course but during the art time we listened to other pieces.

While the music played I had the children draw and paint whatever the music made them feel. It turned out to be an enjoyable experience for Bear, Bam Bam, and Princess. Each created a wonderful masterpiece and as the art dried we discussed their thoughts about the music.

You can see our musical art adventure via this recent YouTube video.

Magic Stix Markers Review/Giveaway

My children have truly enjoyed creating masterpieces with the Magic Stix Washable Markers by The Pencil Grip, Inc. In preparation for this review, we’ve been using these awesome markers for approximately 6 weeks and have enjoyed every minute of it.

You definitely recognize The Pencil Grip, Inc. because I have reviewed for them before. Upon receipt of this new product I was intrigued by the information they offered with the package. I made it my mission to test every fact to ensure its veracity. By the end of this review you will find out if these markers passed every test and also be given an opportunity to win a set for your household.

The first thing that I tested was the company’s claim that these markers are odorless. I had everyone in the house smell them over, and over, and over, and over again. I was pleasantly surprised that these don’t even have the normal marker scent that other companies have on their “unscented” products. To date no one in the house has been able to catch any scent from either of these markers.

Next we tested out the brightness and boldness of the colors as well as the overall quality of these markers. I was very excited with the packaging of this product because it is sleek, stores easily, lays flat, and doesn’t take up much space at all. I really think this one of the best packaging set ups that I have seen offered by this company. I love that all the caps are the same color so that way you don’t have to worry about trying to match them specifically. The colors were all vibrant, unique, and looked great on the artwork that my children and I created. No matter how many times we’ve used them, even the lightest color still comes through with perfect pigment. I’ve even used these when Bible journaling and noted that the colors dried quickly and did not bleed through to other pages.

Last and definitely not least the biggest claim that these markers will not dry out with the cap off for 7seven days was tested. I was the 100% skeptical about this alleged fact and I couldn’t wait to prove them wrong. I left the light brown marker sitting on the bar top, without the cap for seven days. I placed the cap back on so I could record the giveaway video. The cap was only back on the marker for three minutes before I recorded the results. So, did the marker work after seven days with the cap off? You can find that out those results as well as information about the giveaway via my recent YouTube video.

Overall, the Magic Stix Washable Markers are another true testament to the high quality items that The Pencil Grip, Inc. adds to their product line. We appreciated the opportunity to review these markers and to give a set away to one lucky supporter. As stated in the video this is a United States only giveaway. Please refer to giveaway rules for additional requirements and information.

Mess Free Art! Thin Stix Review & Giveaway

Using Thin Stix Creativity Pack has been a joy for our children and even in my new hobby, bible journaling. We received these items to review from The Pencil Grip, Inc. and art has pretty much been mess free ever since!

Pencil Grip 3

The Thin Stix Creativity Pack provide your little artists with the opportunity to paint more frequently all while making no mess and seeing their finished product within minutes.  This pack contains 24 AP CERTIFIED NON-TOXIC paint sticks including the following: 12 assorted colors, 6 neon colors, and 6 metallic colors.  This solid tempera paint stick is thin so it allows for a bit more freedom and finer detail when drawing, filling in art, or defining your creations.  The paint DRIES IN 90 SECONDS, or sooner in most cases, which made use of these supplies all the more frequent in our homeschool art time.  Each paint stick was easy to use on various surfaces including wood, canvas, paper, cardboard, and even in my Bible and planner.

“I like the Thin Stix Creativity Pack! I like how you can hold it like a pencil but it is actually paint and was truly easy to use.  It dried quickly and I didn’t have to wait for hours and hours before my art work was done.  The finished artwork was smooth and the sticks were able to glide easily on my paper.  A few times I pressed down too hard and a piece would break off, but I just smoothed it out with my finger and it blended into the artwork seamlessly.  I think this good for ages 3 and up to use with ease on a regular basis.” Bear, 9 years old

Here are a few user tips for artwork from Bear:

  1. When you want a darker color, just press down a bit harder to deepen the color.
  2. The paint is easy to clean so if you do get any paint on you or the table you can remove it with a baby wipe.
  3. To get close to the lines on drawings you can lightly trace the area before filling it in.

You can also hear Bear’s additional thoughts in his recent YouTube video.

Bible journaling is my new hobby and I thought these tempera paint sticks would be a great addition to my supplies as well.  Usually, people use watercolors for their bible journaling detail; however, I found that the size of these sticks allowed me to freely create beautiful entries.  In using these I did not have any issues with the designs bleeding through the pages which are necessary for this kind of artwork.  I was excited that the rapid drying time made it so easy to add designs to my Bible.  I’m still very new to this but I am enjoying the hobby and how the Thin Stix Creativity Pack added to the designs.

Here are my tips for using these with Bible journaling:

  1. Building up the color is easy to do! I like to apply the first color and let it dry before adding a second coat to deepen it.  This ensures I don’t waste any product.
  2. Don’t be afraid to mess up! I found that making a mistake in my designs with this product actually enhanced the artwork.  Even when the paint coved the scripture, it didn’t bother me because I always start light and build up.
  3. These sticks work great with stencils! I used stencils on a few entries and I didn’t have any issues using them.
  4. For thin lines, grab a paint brush! Yes, these thin paint sticks are thin, but for fine detail I just used a thin brush on the stick and then applied it to my entry.
