Ms. Frizzle Teaches Homeschool Too!

Happy Sunday! This year Team KEMP Academy was excited to have Ms. Frizzle visit and teach our science class weekly via the Magic School Bus Science Club. Now, if you grew up watching The Magic School Bus like I did then you know that whenever Ms. Frizzle is around, an adventure is about to take place.  These kits were such a great addition to our homeschool and made teaching science concepts easy and fun.

Oftentimes, I hear homeschool parents say that science is something that they are intimidated by.  I definitely understand because I’ve felt that way myself and always wonder if I’m truly giving my son the Science education that he deserves.  However, God has reassured my confidence with confirmation through friends, teachers, family, and even strangers that we are on the right track in every subject offered in our homeschool.  I’m so grateful for several friends, who are educators or administrators, that I can bounce ideas off of and who offer us resources to ensure that we are giving our son a quality education at home.  Since we are surrounded by so much support I found confidence to conquer the subjects I initially deemed myself inexperienced or unable to teach.  I no longer allow myself to be bound by “stinking thinking” and consider myself smart, brave, and strong enough to educate our children in all subjects, including Science!

One of the things I wanted to introduce this year was weekly science experiments but I wasn’t sure if we would be able to afford all the supplies.  After looking at several options I stumbled upon the Magic School Bus Science Club and was happy to snag it for a great price.  Since the kits come with everything you need there was no additional cost to our household budget.  We enjoyed using these kits on Fridays and were able to take the provided lessons and spread the experiments out over a month.  We also watched The Magic School Bus episodes that coincided with the current kit.  Bear had a blast with Ms. Frizzle!

So dear homeschool parents, you too can teach every subject required (by your local laws) and desired (by your wonderful students) with confidence, ease, and excitement.  Just be sure to pick resources and curriculum that will help you feel comfortable while educating your students. Remember, if you don’t enjoy teaching it they will not enjoy learning it.

Be sure to check out my review of the Magic School Bus Science Club via my recent video.

Make this week adventurous,

Bible & ABC Curriculum for Preschoolers

Crafty Classroom 5

Our preschoolers have been enjoying the Bible ABC Curriculum Notebook by The Crafty Classroom.  This is a product review that I’ve been anxiously awaiting to share with all my readers, especially those that teach in a school or church setting.  So, let’s skip the small talk and dive right into the details about this product and the creative company that offers it.

 Crafty Classroom 3

The Bible ABC Curriculum Notebook consists of over six hundred pages of awesomeness, which include assembly and teaching instructions, activities, games, and weekly lesson plans for the entire alphabet.  Initially, I was wondering if there was a bible theme that coincides with every letter of our alphabet; however, upon downloading the pdf file, I was pleasantly surprised.  First, the instructions provided to the parent/teacher are detailed and include answers to any questions you might ask.  I love that the weekly lesson plan was already done for me and included scriptures, math, reading, games, and weekly themes surrounding a person from the bible or a vocabulary word.  This curriculum also provided detailed attention to the character of God which was such an excellent addition because it allowed Bam Bam, 3, and Princess, 2, to learn more about the God we serve.  As we’ve used this curriculum they’ve learned that God is a loving, creative, truthful, protective father and so much more which made my heart smile.  For the bible story and scriptures we used the ESV version of the bible and I also reread the story on Fridays from a library book or a children’s bible.

But wait, there’s more! The curriculum also provides writing practice including a writing chart, which we laminated for continued use; scripture copy work pages, letter tracing sheets, and even a blank space for older preschoolers or kindergarteners to write their name.  Bam Bam was so excited to have his first official math worksheet too!  He was happy to count dots, letters, and other items as he learned addition.  Over the course of the curriculum the problems get more challenging and introduce other math concepts to the students.  Princess had the most fun coloring because she is learning the names of the colors so I was happy as she started to recognize the crayons instead of randomly reaching for them.  Now, you know I also had to have Bear join in, so he was in charge of playing the provided games with the children.  Being a junior engineer himself, he enjoyed finding various ways to make the spinner for the Race to the Top game more efficient and he made the bingo game more fun by adding reward candy for completing the activity.

 Crafty Classroom 6

All in all, the Team KEMP Academy truly enjoyed using the Bible ABC Curriculum Notebook by The Crafty Classroom with our newly two and three year old children.  I think this will be a great addition to any homeschool that has preschoolers or kindergarteners that are learning to read.  This would also be useful in a Sunday School setting for younger children and depending on the time allotted, you can easily split the activities up to be used over two Sundays. The Crafty Classroom also offers an Alphabet Curriculum Notebook and a Learn to R.E.A.D. Curriculum Notebook geared towards younger students.

But, don’t just take my word for it!  Head on over to the Homeschool Review Crew blog post, via this crafty hyperlink, to read additional reviews on various products offered by The Crafty Classroom.   Our faith is the most important thing that we can share with our children and it is required in the Bible that we should “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6”  This Bible ABC Curriculum Notebook is a wonderful start to your children’s faith training.

 Make this week joyful,

Ta’Neisha K.

STIYP banner 1

In the beginning of 2017 I started using a Happy Planner which I have mentioned in a few recent blog posts.  After sharing my July monthly flip through in all my planners, via this wonderful blog post, I decided to give you all some insight to the current sticker shops I follow on Instagram and shop via Etsy.  Stick In In Your Planner is the first shop I’m introducing and it just happens to be the first one I ordered from.  Lisa is known for her customizable daily/function stickers, cute kits, and great shipping cost.  The variety of kits and daily stickers offered includes an array of colors, premium finishes, and even additional goodies like the monthly mystery box.  You can see me share a recent haul from her shop via my @Married2KDK Instagram and you can see a close up of the Rose Gold, Mother’s Day kit via this haul video.

But that’s not all I’m sharing today!  I recently received a position on the Stick It In Your Planner PR Team so you know that means I have an exclusive coupon code to share with all my #plannergeek, #plannernewbie, and #planneraddict friends.  **Check the image below for that SPECIAL COUPON CODE**

The items I’ve purchased from Lisa’s planner sticker shop have been great quality, arrive quickly, and are well worth the price.  She communicates with her customers and always responded to my inquiries in a timely manner.  Remember, before I was a team member I was a customer, and I still shared her great products.  So make time to visit Lisa’s shop, browse the virtual aisles, place some stickers or planner accessories in your cart, apply that coupon code, and enjoy your purchases.  Be sure to follow her on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest for plenty of planner inspiration and let her know that @Married2KDK sent you.  You can also check out her blog for a cute planner freebie!

Burgundy On My Mind

Lately, I’ve been going through a burgundy hair phase that has me trying all sorts of cute hairstyles in that color.  Here are a few of my favorite burgundy wigs that allow me the opportunity to rock this color hair without actually changing mine.

  • Dominican Curly half wig has been my newest burgundy sensation because the curl pattern is gorgeous.  I also love that the length and the beautiful highlights that this unit features.  You can check out my review for this curly masterpiece in my recent video.

  • Janet Collection has a short and sassy curly unit by the name of Selina that has recently caught my eye.  This unit is perfect for the busy summer season and I also love to wear it on rainy days, accompanied by a headband.

  • Finally, I’m loving the 100% Human Hair unit by Model Model, called Yaky Cap, in the color 99J.  I have seen so many mixed reviews about this unit but when you work it (style it to your liking), you can WERK IT!  And for the low cost, it is definitely worth the try to check this unit out.

Now of course, I have so many more burgundy units I could share but for now, these are in continuous rotation.  Don’t be afraid to use extensions, clip-ins, and wigs to try out a hair color that is on your mind.  Step into your nearest beauty supply store, have a try on party, and step out wearing your new colored hairstyle with nothing but confidence.

Make this week colorful,

Fun in 50 States, and a FREE Download!

Make a state 2

Home School in the Woods is a hands on history education company that specializes in providing students with creative ways to study and retain knowledge via various projects.  They recently released a new Make-a-State Activity Pak which we had the chance to review.  The Home School in the Woods Activity-Paks series provides students with several projects to fill a lap book that will accompany curriculum but can also be used for independent study.

Make a state 4

The Make-a-State Activity Pak is one of the newest sets available on the company’s website.  This new set provides an opportunity for the student to study about each of the fifty states and Washington, DC through twenty projects that will create a fact filled lap book.  Within this set there are projects for recipes, geography maps, local vocabulary, landmarks, sports, local government, native tribes, agriculture, climate, industry, and timeline of events.  You will also find projects for the state symbols such as the song, bird, quarter, wildlife, motto, seal, flag, and much more.   Detailed instructions on how to construct the lap book and complete each project are also included along with an information sheet for each state and a “Name That State” File Folder Game that the whole family can play.

I must admit this was our first time ever putting together a lap book so we thank God for those detailed instructions.  We committed to completing one activity per day, during the week and Bear had no problem navigating through each activity with ease.  While some required more research than others, he was able to complete assignments within sixty minutes and had fun creating something different each day.  Bear was always excited to try each of the twenty projects so; there was never a dull moment as we navigated through the United States.  We used the Make-a-State Activity Pak to encourage independent study of a few states but Bear particularly enjoyed creating the Texas and California lap books.  During our time with this lap book set Bear was able to dig deep into the history of the United States and I even learned a few things too.

Home School in the Woods offers a myriad of historical projects that have been reviewed by the super awesome Homeschool Review Crew.  In addition to Make-a-State Activity Pak there are four more Activity Paks available including ones for the Old Testament and New Testament.  The Time Traveler American series has seven options covering major moments in United States history each including twenty-five lessons, projects, and lesson plans.  The Lap-Paks sections features five choices of lap books for students in grades K-8 and the Timeline Trio is a comprehensive set that covers eras of history.

If you’re not ready to commit to a full package just yet, you can also try out certain individual items from their catalog via the A` La Carte section.  In fact, they are currently offering a FREE DOWNLOAD of The Erie Canal pop up lap book.  Just use the discount code ALACARTE to get this item for FREE.

How to Survive the Family Reunion

Family Reunion 4

Summer is usually a great time for families to get together, reconnect, and catch up on old times which is always great.  I enjoy hearing the old school music, watching our children run around with their cousins, and listening to the elders tell stories from way, way, way, way back when.  I love the various sounds of laughter, dominoes slamming on the table, trash talk during the spades game, and forks hitting the plate all going on simultaneously.  And, let’s not forget the precious babies being passed from lap to lap or the hugs shared when the newest spouse is introduced.  I LOVE FAMILY REUNIONS!!

Here are my top five tips for surviving the family reunion:

  • Don’t sit at the spades or dominoes table unless you can actually play the games.  Just know that when people sit down at these tables during the reunion they are representing for their whole lineage and  will take no prisoners.  Most families only have reunions every two or more years therefore, the tournament winners have at least 730 days of bragging rights before defending their title again.  Please believe, family will hear about this again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and…
  • Have games and activities lined up for various age groups of children and adults to help keep everyone engaged and participating throughout the day.  For example, in the small children area include toys, coloring books, crayons, etc. In the early elementary area have various board games, family card games, etc.  Include a selfie station for the tweens/teens and even consider putting them in charge of being the photographers for the event.  The whole family can see and share the photos by creating a unique social media hashtag.  Finally, include games for the adults like a newlywed game or family feud as part of the event entertainment.
  • Be prepared for the family elders to say whatever is on their mind!  Age has given the family elders authority to speak it as soon as it enters their minds so if you are short, get ready to hear about it.  If your baby is ugly then come out of denial and get ready to face the music followed by a “bless his heart.”  If you are overweight or obese get ready to hear all their weight loss tips, even if they are big themselves.  If you are single and over 30, you better have a great explanation as to why you aren’t married yet accompanied with a matrimony timeline.  Now deciding whether or not to #clapback is up to you.  I just suggest that you respect their age, smile, and keep it pushing until you’ve hugged all of them.

Family Reunion 5

  • Go on a detox at least 1 week prior to the event.  Drink plenty of water and eat EXTRA healthy.  You may have to travel for your trip which means you might have to fast food along the way.  Plus, you know your favorite uncle will have the BBQ on point and your aunts, grandmother, cousins, and own mother will have assorted sweets available for all reunion attendees.  Don’t be afraid to use this reunion as your cheat day or cheat weekend but prepare your body in advance and don’t skip the leafy green salad at the event.
  • Last, but certainly not least learn all the latest line dances before you go.  In fact, if you are over 30, learn all the newest dances  just so you can show up the young people.  I love the look of surprise on their faces when out dance them in something that was made up yesterday. #yougotserved

Family Reunion 3

So as you pack, plan, and detox in preparation for your family reunion don’t forget the most important thing to do is have fun and make memories.  Enjoy seeing your awesome features and characteristics in your great grandparents, grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, children, and even those twice removed.  Love on everyone!  Hug on everyone!  Take a picture with everyone!  Remember, time spent enjoying family is definitely time well spent.

Make this reunion memorable,

Ta’Neisha K.

My Newest Addiction: Planners Galore!

My newest addiction is one that hit me like a ton of bricks after watching a suggested YouTube video.  My friend Bridgette has been telling me about using a planner for years but with the increase in phone capabilities, I just moved away from pen and paper.  Last year, I noticed that I was becoming drawn to my phone for every menial and important thing, including planning.  I noticed that I’d wake up and reach for my phone immediately and even end the day with playing on my phone.  That is not how it should be!  So, after some research and binge watching of planner videos I decided on the Happy Planner.

In January, I was so grateful that I happened to catch some Happy Planners on clearance in my local Mardel for $5.99 each and I purchased both designs.  One was the horizontal Rose Gold 2016-2017 and the other was vertical Peonies 2016-2017 style.  I immediately put both to use by just practicing spreads and alternating weeks for a couple of months.  As I defined my planner style, I realized that I preferred to use vertical for family/personal planning while the horizontal would work best as a gratitude journal.  In addition to those, I have added a several more planners to fit my lifestyle and I am so excited to share my planner line up for the remainder of 2017.

2017 HAPPY PLANNER LINE UP

  • Family/Personal scheduling will be jotted down in the beautiful Wildflowers 2017-2018, Classic
  • Daily Goals and Resolution Reminders will be placed in my undated A Well Crafted Life, Mini

  • Morning Prayer will be written down in the new horizontal, Have Faith, Classic
  • Weekly Sermon Notes will be transcribed within the 12 Month Box Kit – Faith Edition, Classic

  • Gratitude Journal entries shall be placed in the remaining months of my horizontal, Rose Gold, Classic
  • Fitness plans, goals, and accomplishments will be noted within the Fitness Extension Pack

I truly believe that using my planners for these various avenues has been a great decision.  It is so relaxing to begin and end my day with journaling rather than staring at a smart phone screen.  I’ve been able to put down the phone, pick up a book, and use my time wisely.  Of course, I still scroll aimlessly from time to time; however, those purposeless swipes are few and far between in 2017!  Thank God for my newest addiction and all the time I’ve managed to use wisely since my starting #plannerlife.

You can see more of my weekly spreads, planner hauls, and some of the sticker shops I use on my @Married2KDK Instagram account.  A blog post featuring my favorite sticker shops will be coming soon.  In this month’s flip through videos you will see stickers from several shops including MadeWithSouthernLuvTheBustyPlanner, Armadillo Amore,  StickItInYourPlanner, and PreppyPlannerCo.  You can also see individual flip through videos of each planner I showed via The Happy Planner youtube channel.

Make this week organized,
